1. When you choose retain style all the other settings become nonfunctional, and most of them will be grayed out. You will draw the shape exactly as it was saved by the creator. In the case of the simple stock shapes in PSP7 this means a black stroke 1px wide with no fill.
2. For all 3 tools shown here the Color/Styles settings are used as I have labled them in this screenshot.
3. Using gradients and patterns along with different textures (papers from previous version of PSP) can give you some astounding results. I've only included simple single color fills and strokes to give you you an idea of how this works.
